Note: This winter has been consistently cold over much of the northern U.S., with wintery weather that is extending well into the month of March, slowing the spring thaw. Of the Great Lakes Superior, Huron, & Erie are frozen over 90 percent. Lakes Michigan & Ontario still have open water. The high percentage of freezing of lakes in the northern states forces wintering waterfowl southward, and slows the northward migration of waterfowl coming from the south, causing more waterfowl to land in open rivers in PA than normally would.
